The OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel, part of the Green Pearls® network, is an ideal starting point for hiking in the north of the island. It is practically on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful hiking areas that Tenerife has to offer. Travelers can also take advantage of the services of Norberto Crespo, an experienced guide who knows the island like no other. He makes sure that even beginners have a safe hiking experience – and reveals many interesting details about the area along the way.

Hiking with Norberto: Individual Experiences and Local Knowledge

Norberto Crespo was born in Tenerife and has been working as a hiking guide in the Canary Islands for more than 15 years. He offers small groups an insight into the nature, geography and history of the island. The individually designed tours offer special nature experiences away from the main tourist hotspots. A guided tour is especially recommended for beginners to get to know the conditions and the terrain.

Anaga Mountains Biosphere Reserve – Rugged Rocks and Fairytale Forests

The mountains of Anaga are a paradise for hikers. The rugged slopes of the mountains reach down to the Atlantic Ocean, and an ancient laurel forest gives the impression of being somewhere between a fairy tale world and a fog-shrouded haunted forest. Hikers will find a landscape full of ferns, mosses and spectacular views. The hike from Punta del Hidalgo to Cruz del Carmen is particularly impressive. It passes the cave village of Chinamada, through dense laurel forest to a viewpoint at 940 meters. Those who prefer a shorter hike can walk from Bajamar through the La Goleta ravine to Tegueste.

Recommended Hike:

  • Punta del Hidalgo – Cruz del Carmen: A challenging hike with views of the sea, passing Chinamada, the village of caves, through dense laurel forest to the viewpoint of Cruz del Carmen (940 m)
Length: 10 km | Difficulty: moderate | Hiking time: about 5 hours

Teide National Park – Hiking in Another World

The crater landscape of the Parque Nacional del Teide, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007, looks like a barren lunar landscape for most of the year. The region is characterized by strange volcanic rock formations and dry land. However, this changes in the spring when the diversity of the flora unfolds and everything in the national park begins to bloom. Particularly striking are the characteristic tajinaste plants with their large red inflorescences, one of the symbols of Tenerife. Thos who don’t want or can’t climb the Teide (note: a permit is needed to climb to the summit and to take paths 7, 9, 23 and 28 in the National Park), can climb Mount Guajara instead. From here, hikers are rewarded with a unique view of the Teide. A shorter alternative is the Roques de García circuit, where fascinating geological formations can be discovered.

Recommended Hike:

  • Guajara: A very challenging hike to the third highest peak on the island (2,718 m) with spectacular views of Teide
Length: 11 km | Difficulty: moderate to difficult | Hiking time: about 6 hours

La Esperanza Forest – The Green Heart of Tenerife

The Bosque del la Esperanza is the largest contiguous forest on the island and a paradise for nature lovers. Pine and eucalyptus forests stretch along the trails. The dense vegetation and the pine- and moss-covered ground create an enchanted atmosphere. The route through Las Lagunetas or tour through the highest pine forest of Juelgues are particularly attractive.

Recommended Hike:

  • Juelgues – Pinar de la Esperanza: Tour through the highest pine forest in Tenerife (from 1,000 meters above sea level)
Length: 12 km | Difficulty: easy to moderate | Hiking time: about 5.5 hours

Sustainability on the Trails

The OCÉANO Health Spa Hotel is a member of the Green Pearls® community for a reason. The wellness and health hotel has a strong focus on sustainability, which can be seen in all areas: from kitchen to HEALTH SPA. Even the guided hiking tours are part of the sustainability philosophy. Digital tour descriptions eliminate paper waste, nearly plastic-free lunch packs and reusable bottles reduce waste as much as possible, and on hikes, Norberto uses well-marked trails to protect nature and avoid disturbing wildlife.

And after that?

Regeneration with Healthy Food, Wellness, and Physiotherapeutic Massages

Regeneration and rest are extremely important, especially after strenuous days of hiking. It allows the body to relax and heal, and the mind to process all that has been experienced. OCÉANO helps with this by offering a wide range of health and wellness services, as well as delicious Canarian cuisine. The OCÉANO Relax Program, for example, combines thalasso-therapy treatments, such as seaweed wraps or salt and oil massages, with medical care and participation in the hotel’s yoga and relaxation program. Other wellness offerings, such as massages by trained therapists, Ayurvedic treatments, and relaxation baths, support the regeneration process, while yoga and swimming complement active recreation.
