With an increasing number of people infected with coronavirus (COVID-19) worldwide, developments related to the virus have all the media attention. As we’re all aware of, these developments also have consequences for the global travel industry, which was confirmed by the recent cancellation of ITB Berlin.

So far, in South America only a very small number of people have been infected: at the moment eight cases have been confirmed. Looking at the rates in Europe, North America and Asia, the very low infection rate makes that South America remains a safe travel destination.

The governments of our five Andean destinations have taken several measures to minimize the risk of the virus spreading. However, apart from possibly longer waiting times at airports upon arrival, these precautions don’t impact the travel plans of your clients, and neither have changed people’s welcoming attitude towards tourists. We’ve listed part of the protective measures of each of our destinations.

Bolivia: No confirmed cases of coronavirus. The government has informed the Bolivian population about the symptoms of coronavirus.
Chile: No confirmed cases of coronavirus. International travelers have to fill out a health form upon arrival and in case of any symptoms that may indicate a coronavirus infection the traveler will undergo a medical exam.
Colombia: No confirmed cases of coronavirus. Travelers who have been in a country of risk (e.g. China, South Corea and Italy) in the past 14 days are examined and border controls are following protocols established by the Colombian Ministry of Health.
Peru: No confirmed cases of coronavirus. Travelers with symptoms that could indicate a coronavirus infection are examined and Lima’s international airport has a mobile hospital to be able to treat patients without having to enter the country.
Ecuador: Six people have been infected with coronavirus. The government is closely monitoring the people who have been in contact with the patients. International travelers arriving from countries of risk (e.g. China, Italy and Spain) are examined.

We recommend all tourists who will visit South America in the near future to take hygienic measures, for example by washing their hands frequently and using antibacterial gel, and to enjoy their experiences in our beautiful Andean destinations to the fullest!
