The Amvrakikos Gulf is one of the richest and most extraordinary ecosystems in Greece. Located in the North Western part of the country, it’s the natural border of the regions of Epirus and Aetolia-Acarnania. A place full of life and historical value, has been the fishing ground and home of the Greek people for hundreds of years.
 
The Amvrakikos is a closed 450 square kilometres gulf and it’s a safe breeding ground for fish since it’s protected from predators and it contains a significant amount of Debris. The gulf is famous around Greece for its population of Bottlenose dolphin, which is the national animal of the Greek Nation. These delightful creature’s population in this ecosystem is estimated at around 150. Part of the gulf is a protected national park as its lagoons are home to birds such as Pelicans (Pelecanus Crispus), Flamingos and many other species of birds. This ecosystem is also one of the favourite vacation destination of the Careta-Careta turtle which can be seen in the summer season observing curiously the boats that sail in the gulf while searching for their favourite snack, the jellyfish.
 
Apart from its environmental value, the Amvrakikos is appreciated due to its historical value as on its surrounding area. It has hosted the Greek as well as the Greco-Roman civilisation for centuries and it’s also been the site of a world changing battle (the Battle of Actium) in which the great story of the Roman empire and the foundations of Western civilisation started.
