The first day of summer (21st June) is only one week away, and Airbnb hosts across Europe will be preparing their homes for potential holidaymakers. But, with accommodation in cities across the continet becoming increasingly expensive, it’s more difficult than ever to book a holiday without breaking the bank.

Porto has the most affordable Airbnbs in Europe

Costing an average of €108.57 a night, Porto offers the most economic accommodation in Europe. A popular summer destination, holidaying in this historic city will cost travellers 17% less than the Portuguese captial, Lisbon (€131.03). Those visiting Madrid in Spain will also have to pay over two thirds (68%) more despite neighbouring Portugal, with a price tag of €183.18 per night on average.

Barcelona takes the silver medal, with Airbnbs costing an average of €129.60 per night. Although accommodation is almost a fifth (19%) more expensive than in Porto, Barcelona remains a cheap choice for a summer holiday. Across the north-eastern border into Lyon, France, travellers will pay 40% more for an Airbnb, with an average cost of €182.07 per night.

Portugal’s capital – Lisbon – is in third, certifying the country as the top destination for travellers on a budget. With Airbnbs costing an average of €131.03 a night, Lisbon’s visitors are paying just 1% more than those in Barcelona, Uswitch.com/mortgages can reveal. Staying in the Portuguese capital is almost a quarter less (22%) than staying in the Italian capital, Rome, with an average cost of €167.26 per night.
