Experience Alpine Sustainability

Switzerland has set a goal to become one of the most sustainable destinations in the world. While this aligns with the global trend of more conscious, environmentally friendly travel, the country also depends on the integrity of its natural environment and sensitive alpine ecosystems. Furthermore, climate change is particularly evident in the Alpine country, where glaciers are melting, seasons are shifting, and lower altitudes are experiencing a lack of snow.

We have written a detailed blog article about the changing seasons, the resulting shifts in travel seasons, and the impact these have on tourism. In addition to the Green Pearls® sustainable hotels, the Zermatt Bergbahnen share their perspective on this development.

A Strong Framework: „Swisstainable” as a National Sustainability Strategy

Therefore, sustainability is no longer a niche topic in Swiss tourism; it is now an integral part of a national strategy. Through the Swisstainable program, Switzerland Tourism has partnered with organizations to create an initiative that promotes sustainable travel by making it easier, more visible, and more transparent. The program aims to support businesses on their path to greater sustainability while providing guests with reliable guidance.

Swisstainable is not a traditional certificate; rather, it is a three-stage program. It not only evaluates current sustainability performance, but also actively promotes further development. Participating companies commit to pursuing long-term sustainability goals and documenting their progress continuously. All three criteria — ecological, economic, and social — are considered equally important. The focus is on credible communication, genuine change, and measurable results.

Yet another label?

For guests, Swisstainable means transparency, guidance, and trust. And for hotels like the Hotel Bella Vista, the program provides a useful framework that supports their efforts without forcing them into rigid templates. All participating hotels meet the minimum requirements for comprehensive sustainability management and consistently implement sustainability principles in various areas, such as regional sourcing, renewable energy, social responsibility, and conscious guest communication.

Changes in Travel Behavior: Slow Travel as an Attitude

More and more travelers are looking for places to decelerate, seeking quality over quantity. Instead of emphasizing consumption and speed, today’s focus is often on meaning, retreat, and a sense of responsibility. In Switzerland, hotels like the Waldhotel Fletschhorn and the Hotel Bella Vista Zermatt are leading this change. They prioritize regional value creation, reduce their resource consumption, and provide mindful, authentic, and personally committed hospitality. It’s not about perfection, but rather, attitude, as seen in the zero-waste kitchen, regional supply chains, and conscious energy use.

Additionally, both hotels operate in car-free environments – a crucial component of climate- and environmentally-friendly Alpine tourism. Saas-Fee and Zermatt rely heavily on e-mobility and gentle forms of transportation. These factors promote tranquility, reduce CO₂ emissions, and foster harmony with nature, providing perfect conditions for slow travel.

The Waldhotel Fletschhorn — a Hideaway for Connoisseurs in Saas-Fee

Founded in 1906, this boutique hotel Waldhotel Fletschhorn is nestled in the heart of dense coniferous forests above Saas-Fee. Driving up from the valley through the forest takes just under twenty minutes (or five minutes with the hotel’s e-shuttle). At the summit, guests are met with one thing above all else: complete tranquility. The hotel captivates with its luxurious yet cozy charm, offering an experience unlike that of a typical cabin. The thirteen modern and stylishly furnished rooms and suites offer an incomparable view of the mountain panorama from their private balconies or terraces.

Pioneering environmental work is evident in the house’s water and energy concept: it draws water from an artesian spring 2,100 meters deep, uses UV disinfection, plans to install a photovoltaic system, and obtains renewable energy from local hydropower. The combination of traditional construction methods and contemporary renovations and extensions exemplifies sustainable architecture.

Additionally, the hotel is actively involved in animal and plant conservation, and it maintains three bee colonies. Being wildlife-friendly and not using pesticides means it is not uncommon to see deer grazing in the meadows in the morning.

The heart of the Waldhotel, however, is its renowned gourmet restaurant, famous for its sophisticated, traditional cuisine. Regional, organic ingredients are the foundation of the dishes. Similarly, most of the extensive wine selection, boasting over 7,000 bottles, hails from the region, and the fish is sourced from the hotel’s pond. This combination of natural elements and excellent cuisine makes the Waldhotel Fletschhorn a model of sustainable vacationing.
